Making the Most of a Bad Movie

Kodey Zach » 07 April 2009 » In Game Video » No Comments

There are usually more bad movies than great ones, but how exactly does a movie destined for greatness become such a horrible disaster? Nobody intends to make an awful movie, sometimes it just happens through a combination of bad decisions, or ultimately poorly received by the public.

With the ever increasing complexity of big budget movies, the filmmakers often overlook the obvious. Mistakes can be so easy to make. I’ve seen so many films where the solution to these problems could have been easier if just one person would have looked through the forest to see the trees. Some solutions are so complex, it’s like circling completely around the world rather than turning around and arriving at the same point only a few feet away.

These movies can still go on to have moderate success at the box office, a bad movie doesn?t necessarily mean no business for the studio involved. The public will still pay to go and see these movies at the theatre, especially of Hollywood throws enough money into advertising it.

Money can be made by throwing plenty of cash hard and fast at a movie and have a very intense advertising campaign. They will eventually realise that the movie completely stinks, but if you are quick enough with campaign, then you can get some money back before the public figures it out.

The obvious choice would be in not distributing an awful movie. Having spent all that money and ended up with a bad movie, why throw even more money away? But rather than do all that, Hollywood would rather throw even more money, time and effort into making the movie look as good as possible. They make the trailer that promise the moon and can make the movie look a lot better than it really is, but simply can’t deliver.

Don?t ever undersell your movie, build it up to be much bigger than it actually is. Don?t sell it as a simple boy meets girl story, tell everyone that it?s an explosive romance between a muscle-bound all action hero, and a gorgeous sexy heroine with action all the way.

You can get the audiences rushing to see the movie with the trailer including all the best shots from the movie, even the ones that didn?t even make it into the final cut of the movie.

Big budget movies such as Speed Racer are the kind of movies that can completely destroy production companies, ruin movie stars careers, and prove to the rest of the world that advertising can?t work miracles and even Hollywood can get it drastically wrong.

You can spend as much money as you want on a movie, have the biggest stars, the top director, then spend even more money on advertising, and still not guarantee a success.

Are Some Movies really Worthy of the Rewards?

Jeremy Newton » 17 March 2009 » In Game Video » No Comments

Many people were disappointed that The Dark Knight had not received a nomination for Best Picture for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. When the full nominations were announced on Thursday, it only took a small amount of time before the fans began their backlash. It would seem that since last summer, The Dark Knight is still demanding enormous attention.

The Dark Knight failed to gain one of the five coveted spots for a Best Picture nomination. What were the Academy thinking about when the skipped the Batman? The Dark Knight has already received nominations from the Producers, Writers, and Cinematographers guilds earlier this month and picked up nominations and awards from the Screen Actors Guild, the Golden Globes, and the Grammys.

The late Heath Ledger has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but the movie has not been nominated for Best Picture, nor has Chris Nolan been nominated for a Best Director Oscar. Has the Dark Knight bubble finally burst?

Let me just point something out here, just because something is overrated does not mean it?s not a good or even great movie. It simply means that it gets more praise than it deserves, regardless of how good it is. It just happens that The Dark Knight is a fantastic movie.

The Dark Knight has broken record after record in box office receipts. It has also shown an amazing run at the box office as the awards season continues. The very first weekend the hyperbole emanating over the internet about how fantastically brilliant the movie is was intensely nauseating. It got so bad at one point that a lot of people were calling it the greatest film of all time. Certainly the greatest crime drama of all time and a yardstick that all other super hero movies would be measured against from now on.

The movie is not just an entertaining, albeit dark, story presented with high production value and as much gritty realism as a comic-book movie can sustain. It is also part of the ongoing cultural production and reproduction of the structural imperatives of the capitalist system. A system that upon monopolizing finance capital, subjecting the power of the state to capital, the creation of criminal classes out of any minority group, the reproduction of internal racial inequality on an international level, and the legitimation of violence in keeping the lower classes divided, subservient, and ‘irrational.’

Terrorism is a central theme in The Dark Knight, and how the general public view these insane terrorist and the reaction from the authorities in dealing with them. In short, it shows us how capitalist dominance will prevail.

The next instalment in the Batman franchise is now on everyone?s thoughts. Considering it?s Worldwide take at the box office, a sequel is inevitable.

The Dark Knight sequel could be gearing up for 2011 release, with an estimation of the next Batman movie’s release allegedly been offered by Michael Uslan, the executive producer of The Dark Knight.
